Disability Living Allowance

Disability Living Allowance or DLA is a tax free benefit for people with an illness or disability who need extra help getting around, or help with personal care.
DLA is not means tested. This means that however much money you, your partner or your parents have in savings, it will not affect your claim.

There are two different claim packs, one for under 16’s and one for over 16’s.
If you need help making a claim, ask your CLIC Sargent Worker. The contact number for the Cambridge team is 01223 714439

Guides to help you complete forms are available from your CLIC Sargent worker or you can contact

  • Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), there is one in Addenbrooke’s Hospital or
  • DIAL (Disability Information and Advice Line ) Centre: visit www.dialuk.info
  • CLIC Sargent benefits advisor on 0300 3300803 or email info@clicsargent.org

You can also visit www.direct.gov.uk for more information about what help is available.

Carers Allowance

You may be eligible for Carers allowance if you are a UK resident and are:

  • Over 16 years old
  • Looking after an ill or disabled person for at least 35 hours a week
  • The person you are looking after is receiving other benefits

You cannot get Carers Allowance if you earn more than £95.00 per week after money has been taken off to allow for your expenses which includes some National Insurance (NI) contributions, Income Tax, half of any money you pay towards personal or occupational pension schemes, other expenses you have to pay because they are a necessary part of your job.

Money, tax and benefits

You may be able to get financial help from the Hospital Travel Costs Scheme if you're on a low income, need NHS treatment at a hospital, other NHS centre or private clinic and have been referred by an NHS hospital consultant.
