Did you know that there is now free counselling support at the Oasis for 13-24 year olds with  cancer?

Jo Fretwell is able to offer free confidential support for you or your family to help you deal with the emotional side of your diagnosis and treatment. She can either offer you support herself or you can ask to meet with one of her volunteer counsellors. You can either have a one-off meeting to help with a particular issue or contact her as and when you need someone to talk to. She can also offer a series of planned counselling sessions.

The counsellor will listen to you , and try to help you find the best way of dealing with your problems yourself. No problem is too big or too small to bring to counselling

This service is available to you, your parents, parners or siblings either while you are on treatment or if you have finished treatment and are under 25 years old.

Jo can be contacted on her mobile 07595 216504 or by email jo.fretwell@addenbrookes.nhs.uk

Young ambassadors wanted by Teenage Cancer Trust

Home Retail Group who own Argos and Homebase have nominated Teenage Cancer Trust as their official charity partner from July 2010 – July 2012. This partnership hopes to not only raise at least £2 million for Teenage Cancer Trust but will also increase awareness of the charity and communicate what they do to 53,000 Home Retail Group staff and then on top of this customers of Argos and Homebase. To help encourage staff to fundraise as much as possible for them they are asking young people from across the UK if they would be happy to act as our young ambassadors. Below are some of the opportunities that young ambassadors might get asked to get involved in, however as this partnership is still new some of these might be subject to slight change:

What TCT young ambassadors may be asked to do?

They may be asked to get involved with one of the following:

  • Help open a new Argos store and cut the ribbon alongside an Argos store manager
  • Be present at some cheque presentations to accept money raised by staff
  • Where appropriate to appear in their local media (e.g. local radio, TV, magazines or newspapers) following something they have supported Home Retail Group with
  • Help bucket shake at the launch of the new Argos catalogue which is sometime in January 2011, sometime in July 2011 and then again sometime in January 2012
  • Attend Home Retail Group head office staff events in Milton Keynes to informally chat with staff about the work the charity does, how they can fundraise and bucket shake
  • Possibly be present at the annual Argos store staff conference where they may be asked to do a short talk to staff and meet and greets afterwards
  • Possibly visit a local Homebase or Argos store or a distribution centre and give a short talk to some staff to help motivate them to raise lots of money on behalf of Teenage Cancer Trust

What type of young person TCT are looking for?

  • Someone who is fairly articulate and confident potentially talking to small or large groups of people
  • Someone who is also willing to potentially appear in local media photographs and articles and which may also feature on the Home Retail Group website and Teenage Cancer Trust’s website

What will not happen

  • Home Retail Group staff will never be given the personal contact details of the young ambassadors. All requests by Home Retail Group have to come through the communications team here at Teenage Cancer Trust
  • Young people will not be asked to do too many things
  • Reasonable travel expenses will be paid by Teenage Cancer Trust to the young ambassador

This opportunity is currently available in the Milton Keynes or Bedford area, but Teenage Cancer Trust are always looking for help at these types of events, if you are interested please email, laura.abbas@addenbrookes.nhs.uk or Sarah Henderson [sarah.henderson@teenagecancertrust.org]

We just wanted to let you know that the TCT have finally launched TCTeeNation which will help them to get feedback directly from young people and their families about the service they have received, wherever they have been treated and what suggestions they may have for work they can do in the future. In 2 days they have already had 18 young people and 7 parents respond which is pretty impressive!

You can read more about this initiative here - http://www.teenagecancertrust.org/what-we-do/specialist-services/survey-young-people/

Laura Crane Trust

The Laura Crane Trust is a youth cancer charity in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

They are developing a new project called Chat-World, which will be a 3D virtual world that youth cancer patients can explore as well as chatting to other people who are a similar age and going through a similar thing to themselves.
They have had some focus groups with the Teenage Cancer Trust ward at Leeds General Infirmary but they would like some help from further afield as well.
They have developed a short questionnaire and would really appreciate it if you could take the time to take a look and fill it in. It should only take a couple of minutes and they really need your answers to help them in developing the best service that they can!

The questionnaire can be found at http://bit.ly/chatworld

For more information on the charity or the project, take a look at www.lauracranetrust.org and www.chat-world.org

Thank you!
